Instructions & Example Images

Please use the form to:
  1. Take photos of the stitches on your needle(s) (straight or circular)
  2. (Optional) If you can, tell us how many stitches there are in the photo No longer needed

Notes:

(1) Easiest to do this on your phone

(2) Any projects / yarns / needles are fine
  • Multiple projects are great
  • Multiple photos of same project against different backgrounds also helpful
  • Lace totally fine (count yarnovers as 1 stitch)
  • Castons are especially helpful

(3) Make sure all stitches on needle(s) are clearly visible / unobstructed and in the frame (examples below)
  • Our robot can't count what it can't see!
  • Either lay on a flat surface or hold up current row to camera; stitches should be facing the camera
  • When possible, try to spread out the stitches a bit (for easier counting)
  • If knitting in the round, see below for special instructions
  • If knitting large/long projects, see below for special instructions
  • Got stitchmarkers? Leave 'em in, they're totally fine!

Special instructions for large/long projects

Because our robot can't count stitches it cannot see, these tips should help!

If you can fit all the stitches in a single photo that's great, but, if that's hard, you can split the project into two photos (see example below).

Take one photo of one (approximate) "half," and (optionally) count the stitches on that, then another photo of the other "half," and do the same. Upload as two separate photos with separate counts

Thanks again!

Count = 64 stitches

Count = 77 stitches

Special instructions for knitting in the round

Because our robot can't count stitches it cannot see, these tips should help!

On Double-Pointed Needles
Take separate photos of each needle: arrange your knitting and needles to show just 1 or 2 needles with stitches at a time (without your needle tips obstructing any stitches), and lay your project on a flat surface. Submit a photo of those needles, and then do the same with the remaining needles on separate photos

On Circular Needles (in the round only)
Take separate photos of each half: arrange your stitches so that they are split in approximately half over 2 needles (like in magic loop). This is so that you can lay your project out flat to take a photo. Submit a photo of one half and then another photo of the other half (both laid flat)
